Robert Burchell, a former Marion Giant swimmer, has been named the new Swimming & Diving coach for both the boys and girls team at Marion High School.
Burchell will replace another former Marion swimmer, Willie Tucker, who resigned earlier this fall.
“Coach Tucker was a popular coach and did a lot to generate excitement within the swim program”, said athletic director Jamy Bechler. “In looking at our candidates, we felt that Coach Burchell was the best fit for our program. He has a strong knowledge base of swimming, is a teacher at the high school and has a great deal of enthusiasm for Marion. We felt confident that he would continue to build upon what Coach Tucker started at the middle school and high school levels.”
The girls started practice this week and the boys will being on Monday, November 9th. The first girls meet with be on November 24 at South Adams. The boys will begin competition at Norwell on December 3.
“I am extremely excited about being the new swim coach”, said Burchell. “I’m glad to be back at Marion High school helping out the athletic program because not too long ago I was a swimmer here. I’m excited to see where this swim program goes in the future and plan to do the best that I can. I’ve already meet with many returning swimmers as well as have met at least 12 new individuals who are excited to join this year as their first year. I was raised in Marion school system and in the swimming program and can’t wait to give back.”
