Multiple Teams · Giant Week for Marion Athletics

This is a Giant week for Marion student-athletes.  A number of teams are participating in the IHSAA tournament.  Others are competing at a high level awaiting their turn at the IHSAA tournament series.  Below is a preview of the week…

GIRLS BASKETBALL:   The NCC Champions own a 20-3 record.  They are ranked #8 in the Class 3A.  They begin sectional play at Hamilton Hts against the host school on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.  A win will propel them to the 7:30 pm Sectional Semifinals against the winner of the Guerin Catholic/Heritage Christian game.  Heritage Christian is ranked #2 in Class 3A.  The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30.

GIRLS SWIMMING:  First-year coach Robert Burchell will take his squad down to Hamilton Southeastern on Thursday for the IHSAA Sectionals.  Gates open at 4:30 and the swimming preliminaries begin at 5:30 pm.  Swimming Finals will commence on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.  Live results can be seen at www.southeasternswim.org.  Admission is $6 per session or $10 for the two-day pass.  Click here for the 2016 Girls Sectional Psych Sheet

WRESTLING:  Nine wrestlers have advanced to Saturday’s Peru Regional.  Devin Maggard, the sectional and NCC champion at 132 pounds, leads the Giants.  The Regionals begin at 9:30am.  The top-4 finishers in each weight class will advance to Semi-State on February 13 at the Fort Wayne Coliseum.

GYMNASTICS:  One of the longest-running gymnastics invitationals in Indiana will be held once again this Saturday.  Competition for the Marion Gymnastics Invitational begins at Noon.  Admission is $5.  Teams scheduled to compete are:  Centerville, Frontier, Homestead, Huntington North, Jay County, Marion, McCutcheon, Richmond, Seton Catholic and Scecina.  Homestead has won a total of 6 state championships, ranking 2nd all-time in IHSAA history.

BOYS BASKETBALL:  It is exactly one month away until Marion hosts the Class 3A sectional, but it feels like a tournament week as they travel to long-time rival Muncie Central on Thursday.  The Bearcats are the only team to have won more than Marion’s seven State Championships.  The game will begin with the JV at 6:00 and the varsity scheduled at 7:30.  Marion is 11-4, Muncie Central is 11-6.  The winner of this game will have the number two seed in the East Division for the upcoming NCC Tournament.  On Satuday, Marion will travel to Crispus Attucks for a 2:30 JV start and 4:00 varsity tip-off.  Attucks has a rich history highlighted by Oscar Robertson and 3 State Championships.  Attucks is ranked #8 in Class 3A.  Marion is ranked #11.
