This is a Giant week for Marion student-athletes. A number of teams are participating in the IHSAA tournament. Others are competing at a high level awaiting their turn at the IHSAA tournament series. Below is a preview of the week…
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The NCC Champions own a 20-3 record. They are ranked #8 in the Class 3A. They begin sectional play at Hamilton Hts against the host school on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. A win will propel them to the 7:30 pm Sectional Semifinals against the winner of the Guerin Catholic/Heritage Christian game. Heritage Christian is ranked #2 in Class 3A. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30.
GIRLS SWIMMING: First-year coach Robert Burchell will take his squad down to Hamilton Southeastern on Thursday for the IHSAA Sectionals. Gates open at 4:30 and the swimming preliminaries begin at 5:30 pm. Swimming Finals will commence on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm. Live results can be seen at www.southeasternswim.org. WRESTLING: Nine wrestlers have advanced to Saturday’s Peru Regional. Devin Maggard, the sectional and NCC champion at 132 pounds, leads the Giants. The Regionals begin at 9:30am. The top-4 finishers in each weight class will advance to Semi-State on February 13 at the Fort Wayne Coliseum.
GYMNASTICS: One of the longest-running gymnastics invitationals in Indiana will be held once again this Saturday. Competition for the Marion Gymnastics Invitational begins at Noon. Admission is $5. Teams scheduled to compete are: Centerville, Frontier, Homestead, Huntington North, Jay County, Marion, McCutcheon, Richmond, Seton Catholic and Scecina. Homestead has won a total of 6 state championships, ranking 2nd all-time in IHSAA history.
BOYS BASKETBALL: It is exactly one month away until Marion hosts the Class 3A sectional, but it feels like a tournament week as they travel to long-time rival Muncie Central on Thursday. The Bearcats are the only team to have won more than Marion’s seven State Championships. The game will begin with the JV at 6:00 and the varsity scheduled at 7:30. Marion is 11-4, Muncie Central is 11-6. The winner of this game will have the number two seed in the East Division for the upcoming NCC Tournament. On Satuday, Marion will travel to Crispus Attucks for a 2:30 JV start and 4:00 varsity tip-off. Attucks has a rich history highlighted by Oscar Robertson and 3 State Championships. Attucks is ranked #8 in Class 3A. Marion is ranked #11.
