Former Marion Giant and Mr. Basketball Jay Edwards was at the Bill Green Arena working on the radio broadcast on Saturday night and the 2018-19 Marion Giants played their season opener looking like the 1980’s Dream Team. Marion jumped out to a 19-0 lead with great shooting, a slam dunk and stifling defense and the Giants coasted to a 77-53 victory over Ft. Wayne North.
Marion’s season was delayed due to the success of the football team but the Giants looked to be in mid season form as they dominated Ft. Wayne North from the opening tip until the final quarter. Marion’s sensational sophomore Jalen Blackmon led the way with 33 points and freshman RaSheed Jones added 20 in his varsity debut including 11 first quarter points as the Giants led 33-4 after one. Both Blackmon and Jones shot well from outside as Jalen knocked down 6 three’s and RaSheed hit 5 from outside the three point arc.
Marion senior Qu’Ran Howard was blocking shots and intimidating shots on the defensive end and on the offensive side scored 11 points including two electrifying slam dunks on assists from teammate Blackmon. Junior Trey Miles played a solid floor game and added 9 points for the Giants who played without one of last years starting guards, JK Thomas. Seniors Dre Aguilar and Cortavius Love each scored 2 points in limited minutes for Marion.
On the way to their opening night victory the Giants had a 45-17 lead at the half and led 62-35 after three. The Giants moved to 1-0 with the 77-53 win and will now host Lawrence North next Friday night at 7:30 pm. The Giants JV team won 57-53.
