2. Jalen Blackmon, So., Marion boys basketball,
Blackmon put together a dominant and at times spectacular sophomore season for the Giants. He was seventh in the state in scoring at nearly 27 points per game and is on his way to rewriting Marion’s record book. He scored 725 points this winter and has 1,327 points in two years. Blackmon needs 570 next season to become the leading scorer in Giants’ history, supplanting his dad and coach James Blackmon (1,897). He’s averaging 24.6 points through two seasons which is better than four points higher than Dave Colescott’s school-record career average of 20.1 ppg. He twice topped the 40-point mark with a career-high of 42 at Lafayette Jeff. Blackmon was first-team All-NCC and named to the IBCA’s Underclass Supreme 15.
3. Jazmyn Turner, Sr., Marion girls basketball,
Turner led Grant County in scoring this season at 17.2 points per game and put the Giants on her back in their biggest moments to help deliver North Central Conference, sectional and regional championships. Turner’s accolades include IBCA Large School All-State first team honors and all-NCC first team, and she attended the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Workout. Her 29-point, 10-rebound performance at Lafayette Jeff helped seal the NCC title. Turner also scored 25 in the Giants’ regional championship win over Angola, and she made several key plays in the last minute of regulation and in overtime to help Marion advance to the Class 3A final four.
11. RaShaya Kyle, Jr. Marion girls basketball,
Kyle finished her junior campaign averaging 15.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, nearly three assists and more than two blocks per game. She scored a season-high 29 points against Madison-Grant and pulled down a season-best 19 rebounds against Anderson. She was a key component in helping Marion win the NCC championship as well as aiding the Giants’ advancement into the Class 3A Final Four. Kyle earned all-NCC and IBCA first-team underclass big school all-state honors.
17. JK Thomas, Jr., Marion boys basketball,
Despite missing the first 12 games of the Giants’ season while recovering from a broken leg he suffered in football, Thomas brought instant impact to Marion’s lineup upon his return. He finished the season averaging nearly 15 points a game and had a season-high 30 in their NCC-clinching win Feb. 15 at Harrison (West Lafayette) along with 26 in a road win at McCutcheon. Thomas earned All-NCC first team honors.
25. Victor Lee, Sr., Marion wrestling,
Lee put together an outstanding 24-4 season for the Giants and earned himself a North Central Conference championship wrestling in the 195-pound weight class. Lee was runner-up to Oak Hill’s Mossholder in the Oak Hill Sectional and Peru Regional. Lee’s bid for a second straight trip to the state finals ended when he failed to make weight for the New Haven Semistate. #GFND
