Game 7: GIANTS 83, Fort Wayne South Side 77

Game Summary

— The teams swapped mini runs throughout the first quarter before Matthew Goolsby’s bucket with 10 seconds remaining staked the Giants to a 17-15 lead after one.

— The Archers scored the first seven points of the second quarter then relentlessly attacked the backboards and built a 40-32 lead to halftime.

— The Giants made 12-of-15 field goal attempts and scored 31 points in the 3rd quarter. The Archers still maintained a lead until the Giants put together a 9-2 run over the final 90 seconds to take a 63-62 lead entering the 4th quarter.

— The lead changed hands four times and the game was also tied three times, the last at 72-72, through the first three minutes of the 4th. The Giants then held South Side scoreless for nearly four minutes and took a 79-72 lead with under two minutes to play. The Archers pulled within 81-77 with 39 seconds left but Jalen Blackmon’s free throws with 9.5 seconds left iced the win for the Giants.

With the Giants win, Coach Blackmon moves past legendary Coach Jack Colescott into third place for all-time wins as a coach with 123. Coach Blackmon is in his 17th year as a head coach and holds an overall record of 269-127. He is in his eighth year leading the Giants and has a record of 123-64. Only Bill Green (320) and Woody Weir (163) have more wins at Marion than Coach Blackmon.

With his 40-point outburst, Jalen Blackmon moved ever closer to becoming the all-time leading scorer in Marion Giants’ basketball history. Jalen needs only 118 more points to move his name to the top of the list.

*SCHEDULE UPDATE: The game at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, which was postponed twice, has now officially been cancelled. Athletic Director Steve Moritz announced on Tuesday that the Giants will now travel to Lewis Cass on Saturday, Jan. 23 to fill the opening in the schedule.
